While meibomianitis is curable, people who develop this condition often get it again even after successful treatment. Treatment can be difficult because results aren’t usually immediate. Treatment, however, is effective and will reduce your symptoms.
What is Meibomianitis?
Meibomianitis is inflammation of the meibomian glands, a group of oil-releasing (sebaceous) glands in the eyelids. These glands have tiny openings to release oils onto the surface of the cornea.
Is MGD serious?
It is not usually a serious condition, but can cause discomfort and sometimes blurry vision. If it is not treated, the glands may stop working permanently. MGD can cause dry eye. It is common to have a combination of MGD, dry eye and blepharitis.
What is iLux treatment?
iLux® is a new procedure that allows individualized targeted treatment of evaporative dry eye. The iLux treatment applies light-based heat to the eyelid, melting the trapped oils within the glands. After warming each lid in two different spots, focus-guided compressions are performed to express oils out of the glands.
How is Meibomitis treated?
Warm compresses can help enhance healthy oil secretions and relieve symptoms. In addition, your doctor may prescribe topical antibiotics (such as erythromycin or azithromycin) to help treat the conditions. Oral tetracyclines have both anti-infective and anti-inflammatory effects and can be beneficial.
How do I unclog my eyelid pores?
Warm compresses applied with a clean washcloth two to three times a day can help unclog the meibomian gland pores. Lid hygiene, using a clean washcloth and a few drops of no-tears shampoo, can reduce buildup of secretions on eyelids. Medical therapy, including eye drops, ointments or medications can improve blepharitis.
How is Meibomitis diagnosed?

How do you massage a Meibomian gland?
Massaging helps to push out the oily fluid from the tiny meibomian glands. To massage the eyelids: Massage along the length of the upper and lower eyelids towards the eye. That is, sweeping downwards when moving along the upper eyelid, and upwards when moving along the lower eyelid.
Is MGD permanent?
MGD is believed to be the most common form of lid margin disease—and is thought to be the leading cause of dry eye disease. However, MGD is more than just ‘dry eyes’ or ‘sore eyes’. These symptoms may get much worse for those with MGD and, if left untreated, MGD can result in permanent damage to the eyes.
