Can you walk around Loughrigg Tarn?
This circular walk takes you to the lovely Loughrigg Tarn from Skelwith Bridge. The walk starts from the Skelwith Bridge Hotel and follows country lanes and footpaths around the pretty tarn. It’s a fairly easy climb to the high point above the tarn with splendid views of the surrounding fells.

You soon come to the slower moving river flowing out of Elterwater itself; this is a great short river swim in itself and provides the perfect wild swimming “endless pool” experience if you try and swim back against the flow!
Why is it called the coffin route?
The path is so called because it was used to convey coffins on their final journey to St Oswalds Church in Grasmere. The final section of the walk takes you past Grasmere lake and into Grasmere village where you can see the grave of Wordsworth in the peaceful graveyard of St Oswalds church.

Loughrigg Fell is a relatively short walk and can be done in 2-3 hours, so we decided to start this walk at 4pm and were blessed with some beautiful golden light. After a kilometre, the track has a short, steep section before leveling out as it comes into the open countryside.

There is free car parking near Tarn Foot Farm on the south side of the fell near Loughrigg Tarn. Additional parking is available along the road at Skelwith Bridge to the south too. There are several long stay car parks in Ambleside, Rydal and Grasmere.

Some toilet facilities at Tarn Hows are open. Tramper mobility scooters are available to hire. Tarn Hows is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, for this reason cycling, camping, fires, swimming, boating and fishing are not permitted. Dogs (on leads) are welcome.

Where do I start my walk in the Lake District?
It was only a short drive from Ambleside to my starting point in Elterwater village. Conveniently a car park was close to the bridge spanning Great Langdale Beck. I set off on my walk, the route initially taking me east along the Cumbria Way and alongside Elter Water.
